We are a global leader within a worldwide movement

The Positive Foundation, inaugurated in 1998, organizes a month long, annual breast cancer awareness campaign. Each year, in October, our activities include public service announcements via radio & TV called “Women and Breast Health”, a breast cancer awareness run/walk challenge, free clinical breast examinations screens offered by our resident health care providers, public and private group information demonstration sessions on self-breast examination & the distribution of educational literature like” Breast Self Examination Shower Guides” and “Women and Breast Health Handbook”.  The grand finale, a gala movie night for women only, officially closes out the month.

Clinical breast examinations

Launched free screenings – clinical breast examinations during the month of October. This is now an annual initiative supported by general practitioners on St. Maarten.​

1999

Dress in Pink Day

Launched our annual “Dress in Pink Day” where the entire community was asked to wear PINK for one Friday in October

2009

Annual grand pink parade

“Dress in Pink Day” culminated with launch of our annual grand pink parade through our capital, Philipsburg

2010

100 FREE mammograms

the Positive Foundation, made available 100 FREE mammograms to individuals who needed a mammogram but did not have to means to pay for one. This is now an annual initiative in partnership with St. Maarten Medical Center​

2011

Daisy Wheel

Introduced the “Daisy Wheel” breast cancer awareness tool to Primary Schools (5th and 6th graders)​

2012

Commissioned and published a hand book

Commissioned and published a hand book entitled “Your Guide to overcoming the side effects for Radiation and Chemotherapy with the support of Samenwerkende Fondsen and Care for You NV

2015

Partnered with Aqua mania

Partnered with Aqua mania Adventures for The Pink Sunset Sail – an annual fundraiserand drop editor​

2016

Pink Faces Project

Launched the Pink Faces Project in collaboration with Elektralytes Foundation: - 4 beautiful breast cancer survivors were portrayed on banners displayed on the front of the SXM Princess Julianna International Airport. ​

Partnered with Winair

Partnered with Winair – planes sported a pink ribbon on their fuselage and pilot wore a pink ribbon epaulette​

2016

Partnered with the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine and the Collective Preventive Services

Partnered with the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine and the Collective Preventive Services for a breast abnormalities research project.

2017

Joint prostate and breast cancer awareness poster campaign

Launched a joint prostate and breast cancer awareness poster campaign featuring warriors, survivors, people who have bravely gotten tested and one person who lost the fight​

2020

The goal of our project is to ensure that men and women  in our community are aware that early detection of breast and prostate cancer through regular breast self examinations, scheduled mammogram and clinical breast examination and annual Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing could greatly reduce the seriousness of breast and prostate cancer in our population, if they are practiced more widely.  

How we plan to achieve this

Material is aimed at giving men and women the facts they need to stay healthy and remind them that The Best Protection is Early Detection in the fight against breast and prostate cancer.

Provide our doctor’s waiting rooms and health clinic counters with, year-round up to date information on: -

  • Understanding Breast and Prostate Cancer

  • Early Detection and Screening

  • Diagnosis

  • Treatment and After treatment

  • Nutrition

Prevention through Education

We know that there is no sure way to prevent breast and prostate cancer, but it is our hope that through education, men and women can take measures to catch it early, when it’s easiest to treat.

The educational products include: 

  • Breast & Prostate Cancer Awareness Handbook

    Women can find answers to today’s most asked questions about breast health. It covers the vital Facts on Breast Health, features the last breast cancer screening guidelines and includes the myths and facts about mammography.

  • Breast & Testicular Self-Exam Shower Card

    Both men and women will benefit from this unique shower card. Easy to follow steps and valuable information including instructions from exams in shower, before a mirror and lying down.

  • Women’s and Men’s Health Tests and Screening passport

    Gives women the information they need to stay current on their health tests and screenings. It covers breast cancer exams, thyroid function test, vision and hearing exams etc. with space to write results and notes.

  • Men and Women’s Good Health Journal

    Developed by a doctor to help women monitor their health with space to track screenings, exams, medications, illness, surgeries and more.

  • Posters

    Will promote breast cancer awareness all year long, an effective way to encourage breast cancer awareness in our community

  • Breast self-Examination Demonstrations

    Groups for women will be shown how to do breast self examinations using breast models and video demonstrations.

  • Prostate Cancer Awareness Registration Drives

    men ages 45 years and older are encourages to register for annual PSA screenings
